Picture yourself wandering through a fern-filled Appalachian forest on a sunlight dappled path, where the soft rustling of leaves underfoot is accompanied by a symphony of nature’s sounds. Tall trees hum with gentle chirping of hidden insects and the melodious calls of songbirds perched high in the canopy. Occasionally, the flutter of wings or the scurrying of a tiny creature through the underbrush adds a lively note to the serene atmosphere.
In today’s busy digital world you usually only get to unplug and journey into your local woodlands on rare special occasions, so we strive to create functional and fine art that can take your mind’s eye outdoors to a peaceful place anytime from anywhere.
Our Story
Oh hi!Caleigh and Alan, soul sprouts and the creators of Forest & Fern, moved to Chattanooga in 2023 and immediately knew it was where they wanted to put down roots, get involved in the community, and make a real home for themselves. Both being outdoor enthusiasts, they spend a lot of their time hitting the local trails as well as admiring the wider world in a converted camper van named Vaughn.
Caleigh is the block printer, oil painter, flora collector and seamstress, while Alan is the woodworker, as well as jumping in as an A+ printmaking assistant from time to time. They were each practicing artists for many years before meeting, and feel serendipitously lucky that their styles share such similar aesthetics, going together seamlessly both in the shop and in their nature-inspired home.
While they stay busy at other professions (Caleigh teaches fine art classes at a college level and Alan designs pools and hardscapes), they both find time to create in their duo home workshops, often while hypnotic sounds of a live Phish show float through the air intermingling with the delectable scents of Nag Champa or a made-from-scratch pot of simmering soup.
Our Goal
Forest & Fern was born from two things we love deeply: the plants and animals that surround us, and the joy of creating together. We craft pieces that are both beautiful and functional, designed to bring a sense of calm and connection to everyday life. Inspired by the forests, fields, and wild places we call home, each item is made with care and attention to quality. Our hope is that these pieces help transform your space into a peaceful sanctuary—a place to pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.
